Ever heard the story of the giant ship engine that failed?

The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster.

He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life.

He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed! A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

"What?!" the owners exclaimed. "He hardly did anything!"

So they wrote the old man a note saying, "Please send us an itemized bill."

The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer ..   $         2.00
Knowing where to ......... $      9998.00

Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life makes all the difference.

A few years ago, Joseph was finally given an exit permit by the Russians

and allowed to emigrate to Israel to join his family.

He was told that he could only take what he could pack into one suitcase.

தமிழகத்தில் மிகவும் பெருமை வாய்ந்த ஊர் எது என்றால் கண்ணை முடிக்கொண்டு இந்த ஊரை சொல்லலாம்!

ஏன் தெரியுமா?

எந்த சமயக்குறவன், குறத்திகளாலும் பாடப்படாதா ஊர் தூத்துக்குடி!

ஏன் பாடவில்லை?

சமயம் தொடர்பான ஏந்த ஒரு வழிபாட்டுத்தலமும் இங்கு கிடையாது.

மற்ற அனைத்து நகரங்களும் மதப்பூசல்களில் சிக்கி தன்னுடைய பெருமையை இழந்து சமுதாயத்தில் ஏற்ற தாழ்வு கண்டு பொலிவிழந்து போனது.

ஆனால் துத்துக்குடி என்னும் முத்துக்குளித்துறை போர்ச்சுக்கீசியர்கள் வரும் வரை சுமார் மூவாயிரம் வருடங்களாக சமத்துவபுரமாக திகழ்ந்தது.

அரபியர்கள், சீனர்கள், யவனர்கள் என அனைவரும் இந்த நகருக்கு வருகை தந்து வணிகத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

(திரு டெக்ளா அம்மா அவர்கள் எழுதிய (the pearl fishery coast of Portuguese) நூலில் இது குறித்து விபரமாக எடுத்துக்காட்டுடன்(கல்வெட்டு, சிற்பங்கள், ஓலைகள்) குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

பைபிளில் சாலமன் தலைக்கவசத்தில்(கிரீடத்தில்) தூத்துக்குடி முத்து அலங்கரித்தது, கிளியோபாட்ராவின் விருப்ப ஆபரனமான முத்து மாலை, மற்றும் கிறிஸ்துவ மதத்தை தோற்றுவித்த எசுவடியார் பிறந்த போது (இன்றைய எத்தியோப்பியாவில் இருந்து சென்ற) ஒரு அரசன் கொடுத்த பரிசுகளில் தூத்துக்குடி முத்து மாலையும் ஒன்று (ஆதாரம் பைபிள்) இவைகள் பன்னெடும் காலம் தொட்டே அந்நிய நாடுகளில் தூத்துகுடியின் பெருமை சாற்றும் சான்றுகள்.

*கபாடத்தை(கபாரபுரம்) என்ற சொல் முத்துக்குளித்துறையான தூத்துக்குடியை குறிக்கும் சொல் ஆகும்

சங்கப்பாடல்களில் இந்த ஊர் அதிகம் வருகிறது.

‘முத்துப்பட பரப்பின் கொற்கை முன்துறை’ (நற்றிணை 23-6)

இலங்குழுத் துறைக்கு மெயிறு கெழு துவர்வாய்’ (ஐங்குறு.185.12)
என்றும் கடற்கரையின் பரப்பை ஐங்குறுநூறு பாடுகின்றது.

நற்றேர் வழுதி கொற்கை’ (அகம். 130. 10-11)

’கொற்கையம் பெருந்துறை முத்தொடு பூண்டு’ (சிலம்பு. 14. 180)

இங்கு கொற்கை என்பது தூத்துக்குடியை குறிக்கும் சொல், ஆனால் இதே பேயரில் இன்று தூத்துக்குடிக்கு அருகில் உள்ள ஒரு சிற்றூர் உள்ளது.

அவரர்கள் அவரவர் பணி, கிடைத்ததை உண்டு மிகுந்ததை பகிர்ந்தனர். ஆகையால் இவர்கள் சமய சச்சரவிற்குள் அதிகம் செல்லவில்லை.

இந்த ஊர் நெய்தல் நிலம் பரப்பில் வரும், ஆகையால் இங்கு அடிமட்ட மனிதர் முதல் ஊர்பெரியவர் வரை உழைத்தால்தான் சாப்பாடு என்ற ஒரு சங்கிலி தொடரில் அமைந்து விட்டது. ஆகையால் இவர்களுக்கு விரதம், பூசை, தொழுகை, செபம் என எதுவும் செய்ய கால அவகாசமிருக்கவில்லை,

போர்ச்சுகீசியர் வந்த பிறகு கிருஸ்தவம் இங்கு தழைக்கிறது, சில நூற்றாண்டில் கிருஸ்தவம் பலமாக துவங்க அதன் பிறகு பிற சமயத்தவர்களுக்கு இந்த ஊர் நினைவிற்கு வந்தது. அனால் தூத்துக்குடியில் பழம்பெருமை சொல்ல எந்த ஒரு கோவிலும் இல்லை.

ஆகையால் திடிரென தூத்துக்குடிக்கு அருகில் உள்ள சந்தைபுரம் என்ற ஆத்தூரை திருச்செந்தைபுரமாக மாற்றி திருச்செந்தூராக்கி அங்கு இருந்த பொது வழிபாட்டுத்தலத்தை பிரபலமாக்க அசுரவதம்(சூரசம்ஹாரம்) எக்ஸ்டிரா எல்லாம் சேர்க்க வேண்டி இருந்தது. (இந்த ஊர் பற்றி வரும் தொடரில் விரிவாக காண்போல்)

· முத்துக்குளித்துறை எப்படி தூத்துக்குடியாக மாறியது?.

போர்ச்சுகீசிய மொழியில் (டூ கோரின do corin என்றால் அழகுக்கு பான்படுத்தப்படும் பொருள்) ஆங்கிலத்தில் டேக்ரேசன் என்போம். போர்ச்சுகீசியர்கள் முத்துகுளித்துறையை உச்சரிக்க எளிதாக இருப்பதால் டூ கோரின(do corin) என்று தான் குறிப்பிடுவர்.

இதுவே நாளடைவில் டூகோரின் டுகொரின், துத்துகுடியாக மாறிவிட்டது.

துத்துக்குடியை பெயர் காரணம் பற்றி வேறு சில காரணக்கதைகளும் உண்டு ஆனால் அவை சிலரது கற்பனையில் எழுந்தவைகளே! இந்த காரணகதைகள் குறித்து எந்த ஆதரங்களும் இல்லை.

கடவுளுக்கு ஒரு கடிதம்!

அன்புள்ள கடவுளுக்கு!

நான் இங்கு நலமில்லை. நீ அங்கு நலமாக இருப்பாய் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

இங்கு உன் பெயரில் ஒரு பெரிய பிரச்சனை நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது. சிலர் நீ இந்து என்றும் , சிலர் நீ முஸ்லீம் என்றும், வேறு சிலர் நீ கிறிஸ்தவன் என்றும், மற்றும் பலர் நீ வேறு பிற மதத்தை சேர்ந்தவன் என்றும் சொல்கிறார்கள். இதனால் பல வாதங்களும், குழப்பங்களும், பிரச்சனைகளும், வெட்டு குத்து என்று கொலைகளும், கொடுமைகளும் கூட நடக்கின்றன.

ஒவ்வொருவரும் நீ தன் மதத்தை சேர்ந்தவன் என்று நிரூபிப்பதற்காக நீ வேறு மதக்காரன் என்று நம்புவனை அழிக்க பார்கிறார். அவர்கள் ஆக்கியதையும் அழிக்க பார்கிறார். நீ ஒரே ஒரு முறை வந்து நீ எந்த மதம் என்று சொல்லி விட்டால், இந்த பிரச்சனை தீர்ந்து விடும். அதனால் உன்னை வர சொல்வதற்க்காக தான் இந்த கடிதத்தை எழுதினேன்.

ஆனால், இப்போது தோன்றுகிறது, நீ ஒரு வேளை வந்தால், உன்னை இன்னொரு மதக்காரனாக்கி அந்த மதக்காரர்கள் இந்த மதகாரர்களுடன் சண்டை போட ஆரம்பித்து விடுவார்கள். அதனால் தயவு செய்து இப்போது நீ இங்கு வருவதாக எதாவது எண்ணம் இருந்தால் மாற்றி கொள்ளவும்.

இங்கு இப்போது இருக்கும் நிலைமையில் உன்னை, கடவுள் என்று தன்னை சொல்லி கொள்ளும் பலருள் ஒருவன் என்று சொன்னாலும் ஆச்சரிய படுவதற்கில்லை. அதனால் இப்பொது வராமலிருப்பதே உனக்கு நல்லது!
